I first read The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron years ago and it remains one of my favorite books. It’s likely time for a re-read. My mother first recommended this book for me.
My favorite part of the book is when Cameron writes about something called “artist dates.” These are intentional solo adventures you take with yourself to refill your creative energy. The goal is to spend time doing something that makes you curious or happy, without trying to make it productive.
Some of my favorite artist dates have been going tap dancing, watching a movie by myself, or driving to a new coffee shop just to sit, people-watch, and think. Each time, I notice how my mind relaxes and new ideas start to drift in naturally, like they’ve just been waiting for me to slow down long enough to hear them.
If you’ve been feeling blocked or burned out, try taking yourself on an artist date this week. Go somewhere you’ve never been. Do something small that makes you smile. It might feel strange at first, but you’ll start to hear your creative voice again, and she’ll be glad you showed up.
